Since 1 August 1944 there was a battle in Warsaw in which about 200 000 people were killed. Each house was a fortress, each street was Thermopylae. Germans took no prisoners. Just in the first five days of the battle they murdered about 60 000 civilians at Warsaw’s Wola district. Soviet troops were standing on the east bank of Vistula river from September, but they did nothing to help the insurgents. Supply drops from the allied aircraft were rarely successful while losses among planes and people were big. Warsaw was dying alone at the eyes of the entire world…
